About Self-Realization Fellowship

Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF) was founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda. The International Headquarters in Mount Washington, Los Angeles, was founded in 1925. The mission of SRF is to help people worldwide realise and express the beauty, nobility, and divinity of the human spirit through the Kriya Yoga teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.

Yogananda’s vision was to bridge the timeless wisdom of East and West, showing that all great religions share a single sacred purpose: to lead the soul back to its Source. Through his teachings, SRF offers not just spiritual philosophy but practical techniques that enable anyone—regardless of faith or background—to awaken divine consciousness within. These teachings include step-by-step meditation methods, guidance for daily spiritual living, and wisdom on how to bring peace, joy, and purpose into every aspect of life.

For more than a century, SRF has inspired millions of truth-seekers around the world to awaken their divine potential, find inner peace, and live in harmony with Spirit. Its work continues today through meditation centres, retreats, publications, online offerings, and community events, all dedicated to supporting the soul’s journey toward self-realization, liberation, and union with God.

About Paramahansa Yogananda

Paramahansa Yogananda (1893–1952), often called the Father of Yoga in the West, is one of the most beloved and influential spiritual teachers of the modern era. Born in Gorakhpur, India, he displayed a deep longing for God and an extraordinary spiritual awareness from an early age. His parents were disciples of Lahiri Mahasaya, and Yogananda’s own quest for truth led him to many saints and sages before meeting his guru, Swami Sri Yukteswar, who prepared him for his world-changing mission: to bring the sacred science of Kriya Yoga to the West.

Following divine guidance and his guru’s blessing, Yogananda travelled to America in 1920 as India’s delegate to a congress of religious leaders. That same year, he founded Self-Realization Fellowship to share yoga’s universal science of soul-awakening and demonstrate that spiritual truth transcends culture, creed, and tradition. For more than three decades, he lectured to thousands across America—often filling the largest auditoriums—teaching meditation, yoga, and the essential unity of all great religions.

His influence extended far beyond his physical presence. In 1946, he published his spiritual masterpiece, Autobiography of a Yogi, a book that continues to awaken and inspire millions around the world. Through his teachings, writings, and radiant example, Yogananda showed that divine joy, love, and wisdom are the birthright of every soul—and that through meditation and devotion, anyone can directly experience the presence of God.

About Sydney Centre

Established in 1950, the Sydney Centre has been serving truth-seekers in Australia for more than seventy-five years. As part of Yogananda’s global spiritual family, our centre was created to share the transformative science of Kriya Yoga, the art of meditation, and the universal truths that unite all faiths—right here in Sydney.

Over the decades, it has become a sanctuary of peace, learning, and fellowship—a place where seekers come together to meditate, study sacred teachings, and walk the path to self-realization.

Today, Sydney Centre continues this sacred mission by offering weekly meditation services, study groups, silent retreats, and special commemorations honouring the SRF lineage.

Whether you are encountering Autobiography of a Yogi for the first time, seeking deeper meditation practice, or longing for spiritual community, you will find a warm, supportive family here at Sydney Centre—a place to grow, awaken, and experience the joy and peace of your soul.

The History of Sydney Centre

The first Self-Realization Fellowship meditation group in Sydney was started in Roseville in 1950 by Mrs. Augusta Claude. Because this group was commenced at the request of our Guru, Paramahansa Yogananda, it became the Sydney Centre.

Paramahansa Yogananda wrote a warm, introductory letter of greetings and encouragement to his new devotees in Sydney. Feel free to click on the letter to expand it.

"God bless you, and may you reap the harvest of Self realization in this season of your life. Please know that I am with you all in Spirit, regardless of time and distance"

—Paramahansa Yogananda

In the mid 1950s another group was established in Kirribilli by Constantine and Inessa Tenukest.  The two groups connected in 1958, to organise the first Monastic visit.

Chapel Locations

Sydney Centre devotees first met at Roseville, then at Kirribilli, followed by 13 different locations across Sydney, until we moved into our permanent home in Leichhardt in 2023. The longest periods were spent in Roseville (8 yrs); Edward House (12 years); Redfern (13 years); and Surry Hills (14 years).

For a number of years Sydney Centre members worked to establish a New Premises building fund so that we could buy a permanent home in Sydney. In August 2017 the Centre was incorporated as “Sydney Yogoda Centre” to comply with government regulations for charities.

Leichhardt – a permanent home

The Leichhardt property was purchased in September 2022, and was lovingly renovated between 2022 and 2023 by dedicated Sydney Centre devotee volunteers.

The first service held at Leichhardt was in October 2023. The Chapel was dedicated by two Center Department Brothers visiting Sydney in November 2023.

Brother Chidananda, our beloved SRF President, visited Sydney Centre in January 2025. And in September 2025 Sydney Centre celebrated its 75th Anniversary of continuous service to our Guru’s mission.
